Georgia. Pharmaceutical market trends in 2010

Georgian pharmaceutical market is relatively small - 200 million dollars. Growth rates are relatively low, making the total market growth in 2010 at only 3% in local currency. On of the reasons of such trend was the devaluation of national currency against the U.S. dollar - 7%. In Georgia, the consumption of drugs per head of population is also small - 35.4 USD, while in Ukraine - 62.4, and in Russia - 99.4

Local producers in Georgia control about 14.5% in values, and in recent years their share is being increasing dramatically and in 2010 it increased by 25%, of course, it is mainly the production in bulk, but on a very good level. Taking into consideration the huge influence of local producers in the Georgian market (existence of their own distribution, retail and insurance companies), the next trend to predict difficult. Today, in Georgia there are three major manufacturers of medicines, "Aversi», «PSP», «GPS». The company "Aversi" - the leader of the Georgian market and its share is about 4.5% as a producer's one. Such a precedent (the share of more than 4% from a local manufacturer) is the only as in Belarus, where there is a local producer of "Belmedpreparaty RUE", which occupies about 6% of the market.

Equity ratio Rx drugs to OTC - 66,6:33,4%. Top 5 drugs are groups A (Alimentary tract and metabolism), C (Drugs affecting the cardiovascular system), J (antiinfectives forsystemic use), N (drugs acting on the nervous system) R (drugs acting on therespiratory system).

During the last months many drugs in Georgia become more available at a price 30%.This is due to the fact that eliminated all entry barriers of drugs into the country that will lead to a healthy competition in the market. And a large number of pharmacy discounters are opened today. Industry experts fear that in the absence of uncontrolled import standards is fraught with the danger of counterfeit products.

In Georgia, the predominant format are private closed pharmacies and pharmacy markets are often fall in bankruptcy. The average range of pharmacy has about 3,000 positions. There re about 2800 of pharmacies in Georgia, and basically they are small pharmacies, occupying about 30 sq. m. of retail space. Very often, a drugstore chain pharmacies are heap - 3 pharmacies in one patch.

Since the beginning of 2011 an innovation from the Georgian Parliament came into life to ban doctors prescribing drugs on ready letterheads and to recommend specific products to patients of pharmaceutical companies. For the first violation of the norms the doctor is waiting for a fine of 571 dollars, for the second - the amount is doubled
